Mexican authorities discovered a 600-meter-long drug tunnel on Wednesday, June 19, in the city of Tijuana, Baja California, which connected to San Diego, California (U.S.), and was used for drug trafficking.
“They found a tunnel approximately 600 meters long that connected Mexico with the United States,” confirmed Omar García Harfuch, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).
The discovery came after executing a search warrant on a property, as part of a joint investigation by the SSPC, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), and the Navy (Semar).

The Tijuana-San Diego tunnel is not the first such discovery in the area.
On July 10, 2024, a tunnel was found near the Otay border crossing.
On May 11, 2023, another was discovered near the San Ysidro port of entry.
In 2022, a 532-meter tunnel was located beneath a one-story house in Tijuana’s industrial zone.
Other Similar Cases
Since 2006, at least 15 tunnels have been discovered along the California–Mexico border, mainly in the Otay industrial area, where the terrain is ideal for these underground constructions.
The most sophisticated tunnel was found in January 2020: it featured lighting, air conditioning, high-voltage electricity, an elevator, and a rail system.
